The ruins of the ancient temple, known as Temple of Zeus Areios, lay in an area called “Vortopos”, close to Rodotopi village, at the western feet of Bistouni-Lapsista hillside.
The temple is of ionic style; it is peripteral with a prodomos. It looks to the SE to a paved courtyard with remains of an altar.
The temple has two separate construction phases: one dated to the Hellenistic and the other to the Roman era, probably after its destruction by the troops of Aemilius Paulus (168 BC).
Some scholars linked the temple with the cult of Zeus Areios, where representatives of all Epirotes used to gather in order to make their mutual vowes. Regardless the corectness of the theory, the sanctuary must have been an important administrative center through the molossian territory, as the inscriptions found there, confirm.
