The Eleousa Monastery

The Monastery of Eleousa is located in the western side of the island, at the shores of Pamvotis lake. The name refers to its dedication to the “Virgin Eleousa”, which, in turn, is linked to the miraculous finding of Her icon.
The monastery was fully functional in the 16th century, while a large-scale renovation took place in 1724-1748 and one more in the middle of 19th century.
The catholikon (early 16th century) is a single-space vaulted basilica with a three-sided apse. The cells were built in various periods.
The frescoes in the interrior are dated in three periods: the first in the second half of the 16th century (by the group of George and Frangos Kontaris, famous painters or that era).
The second phase is dated after the middle of the 17th century (probably contemporary to the dedication of the monastery to Virgin Eleousa) up to the early 18th century.
The last phase (by Anastasios from Kapesovo) is datd in 1759, according to an inscription.
The monastery has a remarkable collection of icons, early-printed books and artifacts.
